NEW Training Methods Reach Young Workers

VR MobileAre we doing our younger forklift drivers a dis-service by using old methods of operator training?

It’s the millennial generation, they are digital, mobile and require training that captivates and teaches in a more visual manner. While every operator will still need training in the physical world on a real lift before being put to work, a Virtual Forklift Simulator can help them build the skills, and good driving habits in a safe and controlled environment.

Virtual Forklift Simulators are not a game, but a highly advanced forklift simulator that is an immersive training tool that the gaming generation will understand and adapt to, much more quickly than their parents.

But research shows that the brain only retains 10% of what it reads, 20% of what it hears and 80% of what it experiences. Correct, 80% of what it experiences, and a Virtual Forklift Simulator with augmented reality by way of a high resolution head set (not the toy of an Oculus headset from Facebook) and high-end VR programming that immerses the operator into a full warehouse situation. This training is definitely the next generation of forklift safety training.

But how will the millennial generation accept this new training technique, good question. From new studies that have been taken from other industries that have implemented VR into their organizations, not only have the millenelias been quick to adapt, but even older less “gamer” workers embraced the training techniques.

OSHA Forklift Training Guidelines

OSHA Guidelines for Powered Industrial Trucks

Training Requirements

This section contains safety requirements relating to fire protection, design, maintenance, and use of fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines. This section does not apply to compressed air or nonflammable compressed gas-operated industrial trucks, nor to farm vehicles, nor to vehicles intended primarily for earth moving or over-the-road hauling.
Training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction (e.g., lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video tape, written material), practical training (demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee), and evaluation of the operator's performance in the workplace.
All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence.

3 Good Reasons for Forklift Training

multi lift stand sit pallet squareForklift Training and operator certification is required by OSHA for anyone that is using a Powered Industrial Truck. Many companies across the country still do not understand the value in training their operators, or they are providing the minimal requirements without realizing the value in quality training.

  1. Operators who receive quality training are safer and will reduce losses from damaged product.
  2. Forklift Drivers that are trained will be aware of dangerous situations in your facility and reduce the chance of injury to themselves, your visiting customers or other workers in the warehouse or job site.
  3. If an accident happens, OSHA will not be able to cite you for improper or inadequate training, and you will have greater protection if any injured parties sue you. In addition, untrained operators can cost your company as much as $12,500 per un-trained forklift operator.

While these seem to be common sense and something every company would recognize, many companies don’t see training as a value, or they don’t want to take the time to train operators because it takes away from the work day.

In reality, forklift training only takes a couple hours, it should be done at your facility and the operators should be evaluated at your work place on the lifts they use every day.  A quality training program will not only discuss the OSHA forklift safety guidelines, but will also discuss and when necessary build safety procedures around any hazards in your facility.

On-Line Training

3 lift general class 300pxUInder the OSHA Guidelines for Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT or Forklifts) 1910.178. Training must consist of a "formal" training and a hands on evaluation. Using an online training class can be an acceptable way for companies to provide the standard operator training to satisfy the formal training requirement. However, a qualified person must also perform a hands on evaluation of the operators skills to ensure that they can safely perform their job tasks while operating the equipment.

An online class from Forklift University can be used to help companies, staffing agencies and other organizations in completing this task. Online classes from Forklift University are designed with the company and operator in mind. The training classes are not a difficult, or detailed process to sign up for or take. There is no lengthy forms to fill out, just a basic order form and the class runs at the students pace, by allowing them to read the slide information and then move to the next as they choose. All safety videos are built into the class and run automatically. The test can be taken as many times as necessary to achieve a passing score, and when the test is completed, students receive a temporary license with their name, the date of the class, and the equipment that they trained on. Additionally, students can send in a photo and receive a professional hard plastic license they can carry.

This license is only valid after an evaluation from the employer, and we always reccoment that companies have a trained and qualified instructor on site, to help with this process and ensure that the operator can perform the forklift and job tasks safely.

To sign  up for the online class, go to www.ForkliftIUniversity.com and select the class option. You can pay with a credit card or Paypal and complete your training in about 90 minutes. The training is good in the USA and vaild for 3 years.
